The Galaxy S5 is arguably one of the best all-around smartphones currently on the market. Its quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor paired with 2 GB RAM offers blazing-fast speeds that trump similar-priced mobile devices. Of course, this is probably why Samsung has already sold 10 million units worldwide. But what if the current Galaxy S5 speeds aren’t enough to meet your particular needs? Thankfully, there are several steps owners can take to speed up their Galaxy S5 device, one of which is to disable the lock screen animation. Ever notice the rippling water that displays on the Galaxy S5 each time you unlock it? Although visually appealing, these animations consume both memory and processing power, which could be used for other more important tasks. To disable the lock screen animation, access Settings > Lock Screen > Unlock effect > and tap the button labeled “none.” You can also speed up your Galaxy S5 by disabling unwanted and/or unused apps. The truth is that most people have far more apps installed on their device than they actually use. Some of these apps will continue to hog valuable system resources even they aren’t being used. To disable apps, tap the app drawer…
While most people are busy talking about the recently unveiled Apple iPhone 6, there are several other notable mobile devices being introduced into the market as well. Earlier this month, for instance, Samsung announced a new model of its flagship “phablet,” the Galaxy Note 4. The Galaxy Note 4 offers the best of both worlds, featuring a tablet-like design with all of the features and goodies of a traditional smartphone. So, how does the Galaxy Note 4 plablet compare against the Galaxy S5 smartphone? Size Let’s first talk about the size differences between these two devices, because this is arguably one of the most influential factors consumers use in determining which one is right for them. The Galaxy S5 features a 5.1″ display screen with 1080p resolution and 421 ppi, whereas the Note 4 boasts a larger 5.7″ display with an even higher resolution of 2560 x 1440 pixels. Both display screens feature Super AMOLED technology with the ultra-durable Corning Gorilla Glass 3 covering. Processor In terms of processing power, you really can’t go wrong with the Galaxy S5 or Note 4. However, the Note 4 is slightly faster with a quad-core Snapdragon 805 2.7 GHz CPU. The Galaxy S5,…
Samsung today announced the release of the Galaxy S5 Active to Canadian markets. Up until now, none of the cell carriers in Canada have supported the Galaxy S5 Active. Starting today, however, it will launch on multiple cell carriers. It’s important to note that this isn’t Samsung’s launch-edition flagship smartphone. Instead, it’s the Active variant. The Galaxy S5 Active is designed specifically for active, on-the-go individuals, which is apparent from its rugged body. Both the launch-edition and Galaxy S5 Active feature a 5.1-inch 1080p Gorilla Glass display with Super AMOLED technology, but the Active contains a durable rubber body shell to protect it from damage. Another feature included in the Galaxy S5 Active is Locqus Field Service. This new feature is designed to streamline the jobs of contractors, electricians and general service providers by offering an all-in-one management platform. With Locqus Field Service, you can schedule jobs, dispatch technicians, track employee locations and more. Other than the rugged body design and a few new software tools like Locqus Field Service, however, the Galaxy S5 Active is pretty much the same as the launch-edition Galaxy S5. Both devices have identical under-the-hood specs, including a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor, 2GB RAM and a…
On September 9, Apple unveiled its highly anticipated iPhone 6 at the Flint Performing Arts Center on the De Anza College campus. Technically, the company unveiled two versions of its new flagship smartphone, the standard iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus. So, how do these devices fare against the Samsung Galaxy S5? Display Apple has been criticized in the past for using such a small display screen on previous versions of the iPhone. The iPhone 5, for instance, featured a 4″ display. Well, the new iPhone 6 has a slightly larger display at 4.7″ for the standard version and 5.5″ for the Plus. The Galaxy S5 features a 5.1″ screen. Regarding resolution, the Galaxy S5 is the clear winner with its 1920 x 1080 at 432 ppi screen compared to the iPhone 6’s 1334 x 750 at 326ppi. Camera The Galaxy S5 is equipped with a 16-megapixel primary camera, which is capable of taking some truly remarkable photos. The iPhone 6, on the other hand, is equipped with a smaller and less powerful 8-megapixel camera. Granted, Apple included some goodies like f/2.2 aperture lens and image stabilization software, but it ultimately falls short when compared to Samsung’s flagship smartphone. Processor Apple went with a…
One of Canada’a largest cell carriers, TELUS, is expected to launch the Samsung Galaxy S5 Active in the upcoming weeks. As some of you may already know, the Galaxy S5 Active is currently only available in the U.S. through AT&T. Samsung announced the Active variant of its flagship smartphone earlier this year, confirming an exclusive deal brokered with AT&T. The Galaxy S5 Active remains limited to the U.S., but this may soon change as TELUS prepares to add the device to its lineup of smartphones. So, how do we know that TELUS is planning to launch the Galaxy S5 Active? Several sources, including AndroidHeadlines, report that a “reliable tipster” shared this information. According to the mysterious tipster, TELUS will release the Samsung Galaxy S5 Active sometime next month (no specific date announced yet). This isn’t an official confirmation by any means, but it’s promising news for consumers in Canada who’ve been waiting patiently for Samsung to release the rugged, ultra-durable variant of its flagship smartphone. The Samsung Galaxy S4 Active was an instant success thanks to its water/dust-resistant body. The original Galaxy S4 was not water or dust resistant, and many users ended up damaging or ruining their device by…
Samsung released the highly anticipated Mini variant of its flagship smartphone last month. If you’re late to the game and thinking about purchasing a Samsung smartphone, you should check out our comparison of these two devices below. The Galaxy S5 may boast a bigger screen and better camera, but the small and sleek Galaxy S5 Mini is a viable alternative that some people may prefer. Size As its name suggests, the Galaxy S5 Mini is smaller than the original Galaxy S5. The Galaxy S5 features a 5.1″ display, whereas the Galaxy S5 Mini features a 4.5″ display. In terms of weight, the new Mini variant is also lighter at 120 grams as opposed to 145 grams. Display Resolution Here’s where the original Galaxy S5 really shines. It features a whopping 1,920 x 1,080 screen resolution with 432 ppi. The Galaxy S5 Mini, on the other hand, has a smaller 1,280 x 720 screen resolution with 326 ppi. Body It was rumored that Samsung would possibly use an all or part metal body for the Galaxy S5 Mini. Some people criticized the South Korean company for its use of plastic in the Galaxy S5. In the end, however, Samsung chose an…
Samsung is reportedly preparing to release yet another variant of its flagship smartphone, titled the “Galaxy S5 Duos LTE.” This variant, which features the model #G9009D, comes with two SIM slots instead of the standard one. With dual-SIM slots, users can set up their Galaxy S5 device for use with two different phone numbers (e.g. a personal and business phone line). In all honesty, this isn’t exactly a new variant, as the Galaxy S5 Duos LTE was released into China back in April with a staggering $850 price tag. Samsung announced earlier this month, however, that it was releasing it internationally, starting with the United Arab Emirates and Qatar. Once released in AUE and Qatar, Samsung will push the variant in Poland, before eventually bringing it to the U.S. So, how much will the Galaxy S5 Duos LTE sell for in the U.S. According to IB Times, Welectronics plans to sell the device for $899 — a steep increase from the device’s original price tag of $850. Some consumers already complain that the launch-edition Galaxy S5 is too expensive, so jacking the price could backfire on Samsung. To determine whether or not the Galaxy S5 Duos LTE is worth the cost,…
It’s no secret that Samsung is busy working on variation of its Galaxy S5 flagship smartphone, some of which includes the Galaxy F (Prime), Galaxy S5 Active, Galaxy S5 Mini and Galaxy S5 Zoom. While most consumers and tech analysts were expecting these variations to be released, recent developments suggest another variation of the Galaxy is on the horizon: the Samsung Galaxy S5 Neo. GSM Arena published a screenshot of a benchmark listing depicting an unknown device with the build SM-G850. While there’s been no official confirmation by Samsung, this device is believed to be the company’s upcoming Galaxy S5 Neo. The benchmark listing reveals some pretty interesting information about the hardware and software specs of the SM-G850 device (click on link above for complete details). Assuming this is the Samsung Galaxy S5 Neo, it will feature a 4.7-inch screen with 1280 x 720 pixel resolution and 5-finger gesture support. If you’re familiar with the original launch-edition Galaxy S5, you’ll probably notice these specs are sub-par in comparison. Why is Samsung releasing a smaller variant of its flagship smartphone with lower resolution? The Galaxy S5 Neo is intended to be a smaller and cheaper version of the original Galaxy S5, allowing budget-conscious…
Thanks to our favorite smartphone industry news leaker @evleaks, we now have a sneak peak at Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy F (also known as the Prime variant). We’ve mentioned this device on numerous occasions here on blog, discussing some of its possible features and specifications. While Samsung has yet to confirm the existence of the Galaxy F, we knew it was coming given the company’s similar variants with the Galaxy S4. Evleaks tweeted the Galaxy F photo on July 2, along with the caption: “Samsung Galaxy F, in crystal clear, 2014.” This immediately triggered a response from the smartphone community, with some Twitter users asking questions like “I just noticed that i dont see a front camera?” and “so its different from s5 prime?” These are both frequently asked questions regarding the Galaxy F, so we’ll do our best to answer them. We’re assuming the front-facing camera is one of the small circular devices at the top. Being that the front-facing camera is considered a “secondary” camera, it will feature a lower resolution than the rear-facing “primary” camera. And the Galaxy F is the same as the Prime. Samsung is reportedly marketing it under the “Galaxy F” name — reasons for which we…
Originally unveiled last month, the Nokia Lumia 930 is being touted as the “The most complete Windows Phone to date. It’s the first to properly challenge the flagship might of Android and iOS with its impressive design, new Windows Phone 8.1 software and all round decent specs.” That’s a pretty bold statement considering its use of the Windows mobile operating system. But how exactly does Nokia’s latest flagship smartphone compare to Samsung’s Galaxy S5? Display The Galaxy S5 features a 5.1″ Super AMOLED display with 1080 x 1920 pixels, whereas the Nokia Lumia 930 is just a hair smaller at 5″ with the same 1080 x 1920 pixel resolution. The Nokia Lumia 930 does not have Super AMOLED technology, but rather basic AMOLED. Processor There’s no denying the fact that Samsung’s Galaxy S5 is powered by one of the best mobile processors currently available. It features the Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 quad-core processor for superior speed and performance. The Nokia Lumia 930, on the other hand, is powered by the slower Snapdragon 800 quad-core processor. If you’re looking for a blazing-fast smartphone that’s capable of multitasking with half a dozen or more different applications, stick with the Galaxy S5. Camera One of…
