Last week, the third largest cell carrier in the U.S., T-Mobile, released a new firmware update for the Samsung Galaxy S5. Before most users could finishing downloading it, however, the cell carrier stopped all downloads. Firmware updates are critical in plugging up security vulnerabilities and making various improvements, so why T-Mobile stop its most recent update for the Samsung Galaxy S5?
The G900TUVU1ANE5 firmware update was supposed to fix some software problems stemming from the Galaxy S5’s SMS/MMS messaging system. Basically, Galaxy S5 users were not correctly sending and receiving messages from their device. When notified of this situation, T-Mobile began working on a new firmware update that would supposedly fix it.
While the new Galaxy S5 firmware update does in fact resolve them messaging issue many Galaxy S5 users were experiencing, it also slowed their download speeds to a crawl. Once the new G900TUVU1ANE5 firmware was installed, hundreds of T-Mobile users began to report slow data speeds. According to reports by various users, download speeds dropped to an abysmal 1 MB/sec following the update. T-Mobile looked into the issue and confirmed that was in fact due to the recent Galaxy S5 update, at which point they halted all future downloads — at least for the time being.
T-Mobile originally planned to begin the G900TUVU1ANE5 firmware update on May 22, wrapping things up on June 10. But with hundreds of reports coming suggesting the firmware is broken, the cell carrier was forced to halt all new downloads while pushing this date back. So, when can you expect T-Mobile to release the firmware update for the Galaxy S5? There’s been no official word yet from any T-Mobile representatives but this is something that shouldn’t be too difficult for the company to fix.
“The Samsung Galaxy S 5 Software update to G900TUVU1ANE5 via OTA or Kies has been paused. This post will be updated when further details are available. It appears that many users are having major download issues after updating to yesterday’s ANE5 update. Once the update is applied, download speeds are reduced to 1MB. T-Mobile may even have pulled the update,” said Michael Aybinder on the XDA Developers Forum.
If you already downloaded and installed the new Galaxy S5 firmware update — and your download speeds are normal — you don’t have to do anything. However, if you recently installed the new firmware and are noticing horrendous download speeds, you may want to perform a factory reset to revert back to a previous firmware.
