December 13, 2013

Will Galaxy S5 Follow iPhone with a Budget and Premium Version?

We have a couple of new rumors that have recently surfaced regarding changes Samsung may make to Galaxy S5.

Samsung has apparently taken a cue from Apple and its two different iPhone versions, the iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C in the release of the upcoming, but still unannounced device.

Two Galaxy S5 Device Models

Do you remember when we told you about two different Samsung models that made it to a benchmark test?

We talked about the potential for the two model number variants SM-G900F and SM-G900S to turn out to be the Samsung Galaxy J and the Galaxy S5 because of the recent excitement over a possible Galaxy S5 sighting, and the recent excitement over the Galaxy J release in Taiwan.

However, this is apparently not the case.

According to the International Business Times, the two model number variants SM-G900F and SM-G900S are not two different devices, but two variations on the same device – the Galaxy S5.

The report notes that the SM-G900F is a premium Galaxy S5 version and SM-G900S is a budget Galaxy S5 version, and suggests that Samsung is going this route in an effort to cut device costs.

Unexpected Features Change

To go along with the rumor that there will be two Galaxy S5 devices is the rumor that Samsung is thinking about featuring a display other than its trademark SuperAMOLED, according to SamMobile.

Instead, the Galaxy S5 will apparently get a PLS LCD display because of two distinct advantages it offers.

While the PLS LCD displays have several advantages, the cost of the displays is a practical advantage that the PLS LCD costs about 20 percent less than SuperAMOLED displays.

This obviously reduces the overall device cost, depending on what other changes are made to the basic Galaxy S line design.

PLS LED Display Advantages

The PLS LCD display is the same display that Samsung uses for its Galaxy Tab, not to mention the same display type Google used for the Nexus 10.

The advantages to installing a PLS LCD display include less battery usage, so the device lasts longer, and the fact that all LCD displays show colors much more naturally.

We think that if there are two Galaxy S5 devices, then it is only natural that the PLS LCD display will wind up on the budget Galaxy s5, while the premium Galaxy S5 will sport the same trademark SuperAMOLED display all other Galaxy devices sport.

Even though Samsung has yet to announce the smartphone, the expected Galaxy S5 release date is fast approaching and will be sometime between January and March of 2014.

The sheer volume of Galaxy S5 rumors is  with every passing day as we approach that much-anticipated release date, so stay tuned for upcoming posts – we’ve got a ton of new information and we’re working to get it out as soon as we can.
